Originally, Fairies in the Zelda series looked like tiny winged girls. The N64 era brought about the current “light balls with wings” look. The Wind Waker brought the winged girls back briefly, but nearly every game onward would use the light balls.

I personally would like fairies to have some sort of visible form again, eventually.
